Practice the ASVAB

Word Knowledge

AFQT

Word Knowledge counts toward your AFQT (and is doubled through Verbal Expression) and feeds many job line scores. It is the fastest area to raise, because vocabulary is memorizable.

Raises these line scores: GT, CL, OF, SC, ST. See which jobs

Study plan

  1. Learn 15-20 high-frequency ASVAB words a day with flashcards and spaced review.
  2. Drill common roots, prefixes, and suffixes so you can decode words you do not know.
  3. Practice synonyms in context, the way the test asks them.

Mathematics Knowledge

AFQT

Math Knowledge is an AFQT subtest and improves fast: it is discrete rules you can relearn one topic at a time.

Raises these line scores: CL, EL, FA, GM, ST. See which jobs

Study plan

  1. Relearn in order: fractions and percents, then algebra, then geometry.
  2. Memorize the core formulas cold (area, perimeter, Pythagorean theorem).
  3. Do timed sets and review every miss back to its concept.

Arithmetic Reasoning

AFQT

Arithmetic Reasoning is an AFQT subtest. Most misses are setup, not arithmetic, so the win is translating word problems into equations.

Raises these line scores: GT, CL, CO, EL, FA, SC. See which jobs

Study plan

  1. Translate each word problem: underline the question, list the numbers, pick the operation.
  2. Drill rate-time-distance, percent, ratio, and money problems.
  3. Set the problem up fully before you solve it.
  4. Build your Math Knowledge first; it makes Arithmetic Reasoning easier.

Paragraph Comprehension

AFQT

Paragraph Comprehension is an AFQT subtest (doubled through Verbal Expression). It rewards daily reading, which also builds Word Knowledge.

Raises these line scores: GT, CL, OF, SC, ST. See which jobs

Study plan

  1. Read a short passage every day and state its main idea in one sentence.
  2. Use context clues for unknown words.
  3. Answer from the text; do not over-reason.

General Science

General Science is not part of your AFQT. It only feeds the ST and EL line scores, so prioritize it only if your target job needs them.

Raises these line scores: EL, GM, ST. See which jobs

Study plan

  1. Review the fact base with flashcards: life science, earth science, chemistry, physics.
  2. Focus on recall, not problem-solving.

Mechanical Comprehension

Mechanical Comprehension feeds the ST, MM, and GM line scores (not the AFQT). Prioritize it for mechanical jobs.

Raises these line scores: CO, FA, MM, OF, SC, ST. See which jobs

Study plan

  1. Learn levers, pulleys, gears, force, and mechanical advantage.
  2. Practice the diagram questions.

Electronics Information

Electronics Information feeds the EL and MM line scores (not the AFQT). Prioritize it for electronics jobs.

Raises these line scores: EL, GM, MM. See which jobs

Study plan

  1. Learn voltage, current, resistance, and Ohm's law (V = I x R).
  2. Know series versus parallel circuits and common components.
  3. Drill practice tests.

Auto & Shop Information

Auto and Shop feeds the MM and GM line scores (not the AFQT). Prioritize it for mechanic jobs.

Raises these line scores: CO, GM, MM, OF, SC. See which jobs

Study plan

  1. Learn vehicle systems and the names and uses of common tools.
  2. Use practice tests and a glossary; hands-on experience helps most.
