What mentors can and cannot do

Mentors are volunteers who share their own experience. They are not recruiters, lawyers, or doctors, and they do not speak for the government. Here is what to expect.

Mentors do

  • Share their own story and what service was like for them
  • Explain what to expect in Basic, in plain terms
  • Point you to official resources and to a recruiter when you are ready
  • Be honest about the hard parts

Mentors do not

  • Give legal, immigration, or medical advice
  • Promise outcomes like a citizenship date or a specific job
  • Speak for the Army, the National Guard, or the government
  • Ask for sensitive documents or personal numbers
